Elder Care

Elder care is a term that covers the special care needs of the oldest or most frail senior citizens. A senior is called frail when he or she is unable to do one of six critical activities that are required for self-care. The six activities are getting dressed, taking a bath or shower, physical grooming, taking nutrition, going to the toilet, and transferring. If a person is unable to complete any one of these activities without assistance and it is not due to a temporary illness, the senior is considered to have a chronic functional impairment. Someone needed elder care needs specialized attention and services that can often be quite expensive. There are a number of options and the best choice depends on the particular situation. These options include home care, care in a nursing home, special needs group homes and even hospitalization. Medicare insurance often dictates the type of long term care the elder will receive. There are supplemental insurance plans and long term health insurance plans that will cover the expenses Medicare excludes.
