Identity Theft Scams

Identity theft scams are illegal cases of fraud. In many scams, perpetrators will use some pretense to obtain the personal information of another person. This information may include names, dates of birth, social security numbers or credit card numbers. This information may then be in use by that person to obtain new lines of credit or to apply for employment without using their real name. The result is that the victim has debt they did not accumulate to repay, taxes that are unpaid and in some situations crimes they did not complete. These types of scams occur both online and offline and can range from charity like scams to businesses collecting credit card information.

Fast Facts

  • The cost per victim to restore credit and fight identity theft is at least $500.
  • Many victims are not paying for the mistakes that their perpetrators cause due to the enactment of zero liability fraud protection programs that are now in place.
