Irs Form 1040x

The IRS Form 1040x is used as an amendment to the Form 1040A and Form 1040EZ. If the 1040A or EZ are filed with mistakes, then the taxpayer has either 3 years after the filing date or two years after the date that the tax was paid to submit a 1040x. This is to claim additional credits for tax refunds. To re-file based on bad debt or a worthless security, a taxpayer must file his or her 1040x within 7 years of the original due date. The format of the 1040x is similar to that of the 1040. However, it has three columns.

Fast Facts

  • Changes that cannot be made with the 1040x can be made with the 3115 "Change of Accounting Method" form. This is a far more complicated form used to correct past years business or rental depreciation.
