Irs Form 4868

Individual taxpayers can file an IRS Form 4868 if they are unable to complete their returns before the due date of April 15. This gives them an automatic six-month extension. Generally, this form is used by Americans who are living outside of the United States, who are out of the country when the extension expires or who are serving the country in a combat zone or a qualified hazardous duty area. There are also options available to business owners and those who inherit an estate and want to delay their tax return.

Fast Facts

  • Most members of the military who are serving time overseas qualify for an extension on their tax returns.
