Irs W4

When an individual starts a new job, he or she is expected to fill out an IRS W4 form. This document allows him or her to withhold a portion of his or her income for state and federal taxes. Employers are required to provide their employees with this form and keep records. On the W4 form, an individual can calculate the amount that he or she should withhold. By claiming "zero," an individual asks that the government take the maximum amount of taxes out of his or her paycheck. Generally, in this scenario, the individual can expect to receive a refund check after his or her return has been sent in and analyzed.

Fast Facts

  • Claiming "zero" is not the same as claiming an exemption. If an individual does not make more than $800 in a year, then he or she is exempt from income tax.
  • The taxpayer's employer is expected to fill out lines 8, 9 and 10 of the W4 form to validate the employee's income.
