Pre-tax 401k Investment

A pre-tax 401k investment is most types of 401k plans. Under these types of retirement accounts, which are usually employer sponsored, individuals will deposit funds into their retirement account prior to those funds being taxed as income tax. The employer's payroll department will deduct the funds from the gross income of the individual and deposit them into the retirement account (or send them to the company for management.) Then, the rest of the gross income is taxed for income tax to the federal and state government. The funds added to the 401k investment are called pre-tax because they occur prior to taxation.
