U.S. Savings Bonds

U.S. savings bonds are available at most banks across the country. They are available in values of $50 to $10,000, and in durations of up to 30 years. There are penalties for recouping a bond before 5 years have passed since its purchase. The 30-year duration bond was unavailable form October of 2001 to February of 2006. However, it was reinstated to account for the growing desire for retirement pensions. Interest rates fluctuate with the present economy, but bonds remain as a safe investment. Interest from savings bonds is taxed on the federal level, but not by state or local income taxes.

Fast Facts

  • Bonds often name co-owners in the case that the primary owner dies before recovering the value.
