Stock Market Game Program Receives New York State Grant

The New York State Banking Department has awarded The Stock Market Game program with a grant of $97,961.33 to fund the expansion of their financial education programming. The Stock Market Game program, administered by the Foundation for Investor Education, a non-profit affiliate of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, will use the Banking Department grant to provide the Stock Market Game free of charge to schools in Western New York.

New York State Banking Superintendent Diana L. Taylor said, “With this grant, the Stock Market Game program will be able to fund training and distribution of the game to classrooms throughout Western New York. Over the past thirty years, more than 10 million students have gained skills in inventing and financial management through participation in this program. I am so pleased that we can enable such opportunities for financial education throughout New York State.”

"Their generous grant will allow many more thousands of Western New York's students to learn about long-term savings and investing through their experience with the Stock Market Game program."

The Stock Market Game program is the nation's first and largest educational stock-market simulation program. It is used in fourth through twelfth grades throughout the nation and reaches more than 500,000 students annually. Each team of students in a classroom is given a hypothetical $100,000 to invest over a ten to fifteen week period. The program includes grade-specific curriculum guides, lesson plans, an online simulation for classroom use, and weekly newsletters for teachers to incorporate in their lessons. Participating students learn about how the stock market work and why a stock performs a certain way, and also about larger issues in financial planning, economics, business, social studies, government, civics, technology and math. This Banking Department grant will allow the Stock Market Game to expand to school districts in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Monroe and Niagara Counties, and will provide teachers and students with a practical tool for teaching and learning how to manage money.
